ourhistory
The Blue Flamingo started in 2004 with a clothing giveaway at Dietz Memorial United Methodist Church. Impressed by the quantity of donations, enthusiasm of recipients, and mounds of leftover clothing, the pastor and congregation started thinking about alternate ways to gather and distribute affordable clothing and household goods to neighbors. With founding financial support from root2fruit, an initiative of the Mammel Foundation, the Blue Flamingo was born.
Originally located at 16th and Vinton Streets, the Blue is now located at 10th and Hickory, and has expanded its thrift line of goods to include clothing, books, household goods, vintage items and seasonal décor. We also carry Equal Exchange chocolate and several lines of Fair Trade items - handcrafted jewelry, ornaments and other items made by artisans around the world who earn a living wage for their work. Our programs have grown as well, and include special events, a community garden, yoga class and free books for children.
